DEAKIN: AROUND THE BLOCK ON GREY ST
Around the Block is a project recording and sharing childhood memories of one of Canberra’s iconic neighbourhoods in the 1950s & ’60s when it was a raw, new, pioneering suburb, built by a unique community of diplomat, public service and academic families.
About Around the Block
It started as a recurring daydream, then an exploratory stroll with history-minded friends, then an academic conference paper. And now it’s a fun Canberra Modern walking tour.
I once thought (as we all do) that my childhood was normal. I now see it was pretty amazing – a time capsule telling the story of not only Deakin, but Canberra itself, and in many ways the ‘Modern Australia’ we grew up in.
I’d love to hear from any of you who grew up in the neighbourhood. I’m thinking we could build an early Deakin data base, with stories to go with it.
